Week/End

SAY I’M A BIRD: It’s been 10 years since The Notebook was released (I know, right?), and I loved these two hilarious posts that take a look at the movie with a little levity. Though, let’s be honest, it’s still so watchable!

WHAT TO DO WITH SUMMER FRUIT: Make an Apricot and Strawberry Galette, of course! How wonderfully rustic and delicious does this dessert look?

HELLO, GLAMOROUS: I love a good before and after! Paloma did an amazing job redecorating several rooms of this home as part of “Project Glamorous”!

TOO LEGIT: This “thought of the day” made me laugh outloud (you can purchase it here, too!)

OM: Do you meditate? I’ve tried at various points in my life, but this post  on the power of stillness reminded me that I should make it a priority more often.

GIMME SALAD: I want to eat this! A butter lettuce salad with watermelon and salad. Can you say refreshing?

SALE ALERT: I was out and about earlier this week and popped into a Banana Republic when their window display informed me of massive sales. I ended up going home with this dress — I love it! For whatever reason, BR dresses always seem to fit me really well. You should check out BR as well as Zara this weekend…a massive sale happening in stores there, too! And, while we’re at it, I noticed J.Crew Factory is offering 40-60% off everything online. I think it’s summer sale season, y’all.

LONG HAIR, DON’T CARE: I’m having a bit of haircut regret over here after I recently chopped off a lot of hair — though admittedly, it’s still pretty long. I want it all back anyway, so I was intrigued by these tips for growing your hair out quickly.

BAD MOMMY: Lucy is a pretty spoiled girl, but I have to admit, her home surroundings are nowhere near as fabulous as this Frenchie’s.

You guys. T.G.I.F., for real. This week absolutely flew by — it was incredibly packed, and certainly had its highs and lows! What is everyone up to this weekend? Tomorrow I’m going on an afternoon picnic in the park with friends from high school (who live in or near NY and who I definitely do not see enough); then, everyone’s coming over to our place for fajita night (fun!). Sunday will likely be spent taking a pilates class, maybe at the farmers market, and probably in front of our AC window unit. It’s hot, you guys. I really can’t believe that next week is the start of July. Summer really snuck up on us, no?

Hope you have a wonderful summer weekend!

Hi Victoria – happy weekend! This popped on my reader this morning and it made me think of you since you’ve mentioned you are a big JCrew fan. Thoughts?

Hi A! Wow, what a great post — thanks so much for sharing it! I’ve definitely noticed the vanity sizing thing happening at the Crew over the years (I started shopping from J.Crew when I was in high school in the late 90s, all via the catalogue), and like Belle, have seen my sizes in their clothes decrease dramatically. That being said, on a purely person level, I don’t put much thought into the vanity sizing thing, or let it affect my perception of myself — I’ve noticed lots of retailers do it (or in some cases, the scale goes the other way, and I have to size wayyyy up). However, I totally understand her point of view, and agree that it would be far easier if ALL retailers stuck to the same system of measurement, just to make the shopping experience seamless. To another point, I actually agree wholeheartedly with what a few commenters mentioned — that a lot of the stuff is too trendy these days and not anything I would wear. I tend to shop J.Crew for classic pieces (like sweaters and coats), and if I’m feeling wild, will purchase them in a fun color. Like a couple people wrote, I’m also in the camp of waiting for everything to go on sale (which it ALWAYS does), so that those “basics” don’t actually cost as much. Complaints of quality aside, I’ve had a schoolboy blazer and 3 different coats that I bought from them for about 2-3 years now and have had no issues with the clothing falling apart, so I can’t speak to that issue.

Funnily enough, I find that J.Crew Factory tends to produce a lot of the older, more classic pieces and silhouettes from the J.Crew everyone seems to miss, and luckily, at a better price point. I bought a few pairs of the “alternative” Factory Minnie (aka “Winnie”) pants last summer, and have found they’ve held up great, and were a fraction of the price that J.Crew used to sell them at.

One final thing I WILL rant about and have often thought about mentioning: I can’t STAND their dumb French language shirts. Half the time the phrases are elementary and/or totally stupid.

Thanks again for sharing this! What’s your take?

I’m sorry your week was a little too full, mine was great! First full week off of school for the summer and I am LOVING it. Your upcoming weekend sounds wonderful. I have a Bar Mitzvah to go to on Saturday for a close family friend’s son (which I’m sure will be a blast) and then on Sunday one of my friends is hosting a party at the lake to say goodbye before she moves to Virginia. Hope next week is a little calmer for y’all!

I want to see your “shorter” hair! A tip that was not listed and much better than Viviscal (which I’ve heard very mixed reviews on and is too expensive) – simply taking Biotin. It works :)
