You know Gray Malin, yes? Fellow former Texan and photographer behind such wonderful, whimsical series as à la Plage, à la Piscine and these famed shots of Prada, Marfa? His latest series is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while now. Last December, Gray took a trip down to Antarctica — a place I think would be fascinating to visit, despite so few people having the privilege to do so. I followed along with the trip as he posted some shots to Instagram (penguins!!!!), and was curious to see what images he’d come back with.
In short, I love his new Antarctica series. The whimsy and joy that are hallmarks of his photographs are there, for sure, but so is the political statement. For me, it’s art that makes me smile, makes me think, and makes me dream, all at the same time. Indulge in it this Friday, why don’t you? (I can’t stop staring at this triptych).
The Antarctica series is currently available for sale via One Kings Lane, though since the prints are first editions, they’re quite pricey. Fingers crossed these will eventually be available in smaller formats! And I definitely recommend you check out Gray’s Instagram to see lots of behind the scenes shots (flamingoes WITH penguins!!!!). There are lots of extra shots from the trip recently posted, but the play-by-play was happening in mid-December. Enjoy! And happy weekend.

Love this new series! We have two of his prints – one from his Dolce Vita series and another from his A La Plage series – but might need to add Anarctica to our walls!
I actually had the chance to meet him last weekend (he’s a friend of a friend) and he’s just as nice as you’d imagine.

I am having a serious love affair with the flamingos! I definitely hope these is a more affordable series that’s released.
