Huarache is the kind of word you say and then can’t help but smile. It just sounds so festive — huarache! But if I’m honest, huaraches haven’t typically been something I’ve included in my summer wardrobe. Most of the styles I’ve seen over the years are either too mom-ish or use the designation of ‘huaraches’ very loosely. When I discovered this line of huaraches from Ix though, “These,” I thought, “These are huaraches I can get behind.”

Ix — which means water in Mayan and is pronounced eeks — is a new company not only making adorable huaraches that are perfect for casual summer style, but also has a heart: 15% of their profits are donated to Charity:Water, which helps bring clean drinking water to rural, often impoverished communities around the world. In the case of Ix, the donations go towards helping communities around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, where Ix founders John and Francesca Kennedy are originally from.

Beyond the great back story, the huaraches themselves are super comfortable. The soles are a cushy rubber, and the leather is pretty pliable — even in hot temps, and with swollen, kind of gross, sweaty feet, the shoes feel comfortable and I’ve had no issues running errands around town in them (bonus: all the compliments you get on how cool your shoes are). The back of the shoes hit my ankle bones a little bit, which bothered me the first time I wore them and left small blisters, but I’ve noticed since first wear, it hasn’t been an issue as the leather continues to soften and my feet get used to the shoes.

I opted for the classic white and tan ones, but was thisclose to snagging the purple ones, just because I think they’re really fun. The huaraches are currently available online, and if you’re lucky enough to live in Center Valley, PA, you can also snag a pair at this retailer. What color would you pick?

I almost picked up a pair of huaraches when I was in Mexico, but I’m glad I didn’t-I’ve been seeing these around lately, and they’re for such a good cause that I’d rather get them, instead!

Hey, great shoes and review! How do they run size wise? I wear a 5 or 5 1/2, wide feet. I have no idea what size to get.

Hi L! They were pretty true to size. I found that at first, they felt a little tight, but after wearing a few times, the leather and canvas stretched a bit and they fit perfectly. They’re one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I own! They’ve held up really well too, a year later.
