Palette Play: when mint met rust

Over the weekend, I finally broke down and after approximately 8 to 9 months of not buying any new clothes (yes, you just read that right), I finally felt comfortable enough with my savings to replenish my wardrobe. It felt good, and really exciting, despite that initial panic when I first hit the ‘purchase’ button (the never ending plight of a freelancer!). At the top of my wish list for fall but still not purchased? These mint toothpick cords from the Crew. I love how this color translates on the textural look of cords (and cords are a total must have in SF, since the weather stays fall-like for so much of the year!).

I was browsing around on Architectural Digest yesterday, when I spotted this room and it immediately reminded me of the pants. But what really surprised me was how well that beautiful wood table, with it’s rich rusty red tones, paired so nicely with the minty fresh walls. It got me thinking — what would the J.Crew cords look like with a rust colored sweater? And how else could the elements from this gorgeous room get pulled in to the outfit?

Turns out — it looks pretty cute!

9 months without purchasing is impressive. I cant manage two weeks without the siren of Zara calling me in! Love the selection you have pulled together, mint and rust does work well.

I did a similar pairing for my post today (although the rust in the outfit was from the shoes and the mint was a sweater) and I agree with you, I think they complement each other really well!

I would never think to pair these two together but they go so well for fall. I also love that necklace because it looks like the jewelry I used to make out of soda can tops. ha!

You have no idea how happy it makes me to learn that I’m not the only person that gets serious shopping/spending money anxiety. And this combo is one of my all time faves and I am going to copy you and get those pants. Sorry I’m not sorry!

i have mint jeans and i’ve found them to be incredibly versatile… you’ll have tons of things you can wear with your cords! but i’m definitely going to try something rust with them for fall now!

I didn’t think I would like this color combination, but once I saw how you pulled it together, love! Those cords are fantastic.

Don’t know if this is me dweebing out, but I’m pretty sure Marni from Halloweentown (yes, a Disney original movie from years ago) rocked this color combo as she began her adventures in the first installment. Have loved these colors together ever since.

First of all, 8 or 9 months?!?! I’ve got to try that. Second, surprisedly, I like the combination. I wouldn’t have thought to put those colors together, but there’s something about the unexpected combination that works really well together. Good job.

J.Crew Factory has almost identical mint cords for $69.50 , if saving $30 will ease your worries:

Interesting! I wonder what the difference is. Color defects?

      • 8.7.12

The factory items are produced for sale in that channel, so they aren’t defective. I buy from there all the time and everything has held up beautifully!

Such a cute look! I would never think to pair mint and rust together, but it’s the perfect way to transition the color into fall. Also, 9 months with no shopping- that’s impressive; I’d love to know what you bought recently!

Oh my gosh…I know I’m just beating a dead horse at this point, but 8-9 months?! I’m seriously impressed. Maybe you should write a quick post on how you managed to ignore the lure of shopping : )
