Week/End

colorful weekend

PRESIDENT’S DAY SALES!: This month is flying by so quickly, I didn’t even realize it was already President’s Day until I started getting sale alerts! There are two good ones you should know about for this weekend. Nordstrom’s clearance sale is on now, with upwards of 40% off wear-now winter styles (over-the-knee boots!), and pieces that’ll be perfect come spring (like these open toed booties and these white loafers). And, Gap is offering 30-50% off items with the code WINTER (I’ve heard from many of you that Gap skinny black pants are among your favorite wardrobe workhorses too, so now’s the perfect time to scoop up a pair). Happy sale shopping!

FIFTY SHADES REVIEW: So I saw Fifty Shades of Grey on Wednesday night at an early screening. Are you planning to see it? Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be (Dakota Johnson was actually pretty decent, Jamie Dornan is just nice to look at, and the production values were good). But really, the movie ended, and I thought to myself, “Oh. Ok.” It was kind of a movie about nothing! The sex scenes were pretty tame and not especially numerous (I mean, I feel like I’ve seen crazier things on Game of Thrones), so when you strip away sex from the plot of Fifty Shades of Grey, which is admittedly already questionable source material…you don’t really have a lot left. I have no idea how they’re going to make sequels 2 and 3 all that compelling. So yeah, see it if you’re curious, and don’t worry about it being too salacious…it’s definitely a solid R, and nowhere near NC-17 levels. I agree with pretty much all the reviews I’ve read, including this one and this one; this hilarious play by play of the first sex scene is extremely accurate (and probs NSFW)!

ARE WE RICH?: An interesting interview with the author of The Opposite of Spoiled, a new book that discusses teaching kids about money, socioeconomics, and comparison in the age of social media.

BE MINE: A fun look at the history of candy “conversation” hearts, and how they tell us a lot about our current culture.

ALL ABOUT LOVE: 10 beautiful quotes about love. Beautiful no matter your relationship status!

THE MEASLES MESS: A great, comprehensive look at the history of measles, the advent of vaccines, and the mess we’re in now. No, not a sexy article, but an important current event to know about.

A QUICK WAY TO CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES: I happened to wash my makeup brushes this week after…well, way too long of a time. Erin shared a great ‘hack’ on how you can clean your brushes more frequently.

HOMEY BAKED CHICKEN: Need a comforting, easy recipe for this weekend? Kerry’s chicken, marinated in crème fraÎche and herbs overnight, sounds absolutely delectable.

Anyone have fun plans for the long weekend or Valentine’s Day? We’re laying low tomorrow night, probably making dinner at home and sharing a good bottle of wine (is it just me, or does going out on Valentine’s Day always seems to mean prix fixe menus that are never as good as the regular menu?). Sunday it’s set to be unbelievably cold here in New York, with a low of 5. Ugh.

Hope your weekend is full of love and warmth — both of the emotional and meteorological variety!

Happy Friday! I think I’m going to have to see 50 Shades just because, but think I will probably agree with your assessment :) Stay warm!!

That 50 Shades play-by-play…tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard. Thank you for that, good way to start my day.

I still can’t decide whether or not to see 50 shades. I read the books (#guilty) but I think I would be too embarrassed to go see the movie! Glad to hear your thoughts on it!

For me, it was definitely the cultural curiosity to see what all the fuss was about, and also see how they made this thing! FWIW, in my screening, it was completely packed, and surprisingly, about 15-20% guys, so I say ain’t no shame!

I’m pretty sure I saw that wall graffiti at Wynwood in Miami! So gorge! Also, not gonna lie, can’t wait to see 50 Shades, even though I don’t expect much from it. Happy weekend!
